Umbilical cord prolapse:

An umbilical cord prolapse occurs when the umbilical cord falls out of the uterus (into the vagina or outside the vagina) before the baby is born.  The umbilical cord can spasm which blocks the blood supply to the baby.  This is an emergency which requires the baby to be born immediately, usually by caesarean section.
